Here are two services I found that provide Map Matching via a REST API. Map Matching in action: the collected GPS coordinates (shown in black) have been “matched” to existing trails/roads (shown in yellow) I imagine this process would be most effective when hiking very popular trails, or if you’re biking along roads. Map Matching adjusts collected GPS points to “match-up” with existing roads or trails your GPS device puts you near the trail, but the matching puts you directly on it. Elevation Data Correction – correcting elevation data by looking up actual elevation using an API or service rather than using the phone’s reported value.Point Smoothing – mathematical formulas to smooth out data by removing outliers, taking rolling averages, etc.Map Matching – adjusting GPS points to match established road or trails, similar to routes “snapping” to the nearest road. Fortunately, there are techniques out there that can improve the quality of the GPS data. I quickly learned that Smartphones and handheld GPS devices can be inaccurate at recording certain types of GPS information, like elevation 1 2. The new app does a pretty good job at capturing the GPS coordinates, but falls short of Strava’s ability to smooth-out routes and report accurate elevation (which I imagine Strava is looking-up backend rather than using the phone’s reported value). I used Strava for many years, but recently switched to another generic app called MyTracks. I love recording my GPS routes when hiking or going for a bike ride. Improving the Quality of GPS Track Data. There is only 1 map already marked and if I wanted to track a run or use myTracks for any other purpose I have to completely delete my progress to start another. I use myTracks to build a map and keep track of all the roads I drive on. Each that hold a separate map lined out wherever you traveled but only when you access that specific map. Would suggest myTracks to allow up to 3 files. I think the reviews are low because of past problems with myTracks, but believe if downloaded today that you will prob have a better experience with it. I use it to track my drives through neighborhoods and it worked perfectly everytime. Not only that but myTracks is free compared to many others on myTracks Store that do the same thing, and the only one out of at least 10 that efficiently tracked my vehicle. However, I believe the development team has taken note of these reviews and problems and actually fixed them. I was hesitant at first because I did see some negative reviews, especially ones suggesting that myTracks suddenly stops working for them. Available in multiple languages: English, German, French, and Japanese. Track Import: Import GPS tracks to the track library from other apps using the GPX file format. It can also be used for direct track recording. Apple Watch: Contains an Apple Watch App with quick access to all major features and information of your recording. iCloud: Synchronize tracks and folder structure between all Apple devices, both iOS and macOS. Search: Search for addresses or special points (POIs) within myTracks. Diary Mode: A special recording mode that creates a single track for each day using a power-efficient iOS feature called "major location changes". Export and Sharing: Export tracks as GPX, KML, or KMZ files. a folder for a year or a folder for a holiday. Track Organization: Organize tracks using folders, e.g. Once an offline map has been loaded to your iPhone, you can zoom in to any detail of the map without an internet connection. Offline Maps: Provides offline vector maps for every country of the world. Maps: Tracks are shown on pixel or vector maps based on OpenStreetMap. GPS Recording: Record GPS tracks using iPhone or Apple Watch without an active internet connection.
